Day-old chicks in Ghana do not have a single price, so the honest answer to "how much are they?" is "it depends, and here is how to work it out before you buy." The price turns on the type of bird, how many you order, the vaccination and health programme that comes with the batch, the season and the cost of delivery to your town. Agro Prime Ghana runs a poultry hatchery in Kasoa and supplies day-old broiler and layer chicks, point-of-lay pullets and feed across Ghana. We will give you a current quote for your order on WhatsApp at +233 24 915 1503, and that quote is the figure to plan around. This page shows you the cost drivers, a simple way to budget the whole batch, and the questions to ask so you compare quotes on the same basis.
From the Agro Prime Ghana team — a working hatchery in Kasoa supplying day-old chicks, point-of-lay pullets and feed across Ghana. Last updated October 2026.
Quick answer
There is no fixed price for a day-old chick in Ghana on this page. We did not find a dated, public cedi price for day-old chicks that we would stand behind, and Agro Prime does not publish a price list here. To get the number that applies to you, message us on WhatsApp (+233 24 915 1503) with the breed, the quantity and your delivery town. We will reply with a quote for that order. To see the stock first, book a visit to the Kasoa hatchery.
What the price of a day-old chick covers
The quoted price of a chick is the start of your spend, not the total. The chick itself carries the hatchery's cost of producing it, and the quote should tell you what is included: the breed, the vaccination record, the hatch date and the handling and transport to you. Everything after the chick arrives, from heat and feed to litter, water, vaccines and labour, is your cost to plan for. A useful habit is to ask every supplier the same questions, so you can compare the quotes on equal terms.
Feed is where most of the running cost sits. Ghana's USDA Foreign Agricultural Service reported in January 2022 that feeding costs were estimated at almost 80 percent of the total cost of production for broilers and layers. That is an estimate from the report, not a fixed figure for every farm, but it tells you where to focus your planning. The price of feed has moved a lot. The USDA's data show a broiler pre-starter mash rising from GHS 230 per 50 kg bag in 2019 to GHS 292 in 2021.

A simple way to budget the whole batch
You do not need a complicated spreadsheet to estimate your chick budget. Start with the quote, add the costs that come after the chick, and allow a buffer for early losses. The formula is straightforward:
- Chick cost = quoted price per bird × number of birds ordered
- Delivery = the transport cost to your town, confirmed when you order
- Rearing costs = feed, heat, litter, water, vaccines and labour over the rearing period
- Loss allowance = the cost of the birds you plan to lose early, so your sales still meet your plan
The table below sets out each line, what to ask us and what to check yourself. Fill it in with real quotes before you commit.
| Budget line | What it covers | What to ask us |
|---|---|---|
| Day-old chicks | The bird itself, for the breed and quantity you choose. | Price per bird at your quantity, the breed, and what it includes. |
| Vaccination | The vaccines the batch has had, and the next ones due. | Which vaccines were given, when, and the schedule for the next ones. |
| Feed | Starter, grower and finisher or layer feed across the whole rearing period. | Feed plan for your breed and the feed bag prices at the time you order. |
| Brooding and heat | Heat source, litter, feeders and drinkers for the first weeks. | What equipment you need to have ready before the chicks arrive. |
| Delivery | Transport from the Kasoa hatchery to your town. | The delivery cost and timing for your town, confirmed in writing. |
| Loss allowance | Birds you expect to lose early, so you still meet your sales plan. | Our policy on losses in transit and early mortality. |
What the feed numbers tell you about your budget
The USDA's table of Ghanaian feed prices for 2021 gives a sense of where your money goes. Broiler pre-starter mash was GHS 292 per 50 kg bag, starter mash GHS 175, grower mash GHS 173, soybean meal GHS 215 and corn GHS 160. Those are dated figures, from a report published in January 2022, and they will not match the price at your feed store today. Use them to understand the mix of costs, then ask us for current feed prices alongside your chick quote.
One practical point stands out. Pre-starter and starter feed are priced differently from grower feed, so the feed stage you buy most of will depend on your breed and your sales timing. A broiler plan with a long grower period needs a bigger feed budget than one that sells earlier. Our broiler feeding guide helps you plan each stage.
Why a cheap chick can cost more
When you see a low price, check what it is buying. A chick that starts weak, arrives stressed or has an unclear vaccination record can cost more in losses, slower growth and extra feed than a fairly priced chick from a supplier who can explain its health programme. A 2022 study of Ghana's broiler systems in the International Food and Agribusiness Management Review identified feed and day-old chick costs as the most significant production cost items, so every bird that does not perform adds to the total. Ask about the breed, the health record and the delivery arrangements before you decide that a price is good.

How to compare two quotes fairly
Quotes only help if they are comparable. Before you decide between two suppliers, check these points on each:
- Same breed and purpose. A broiler quote and a layer quote are not comparable, and neither is a chick quote and a pullet quote.
- Same quantity. Compare the price per bird at the same number of birds, and ask about any minimum order.
- Same health terms. Ask what vaccines the batch has had and when the next ones are due.
- Same delivery terms. Confirm the delivery cost, the timing and what happens to losses in transit.
- Same validity. Ask how long the quote holds, because prices can change with feed costs and hatch planning.
When two quotes look far apart, the cause is often a difference in one of these points rather than the bird itself.
How to get your price from Agro Prime
- Decide your goal: meat (broiler), eggs (layer) or point-of-lay pullets for eggs sooner.
- Count your birds and tell us the number you want to end up with, so we can advise on a sensible buffer.
- Name your delivery town. We confirm delivery cost and timing for that town when you message us.
- Message us on WhatsApp at +233 24 915 1503. Ask for the price per bird, what it includes, the vaccination record and the next hatch date.
- Confirm the quote in writing and agree the terms before you pay.
Planning ahead: brooding and business basics
The chick price is easier to justify when you are ready for the birds on arrival. Have the brooder, heat, litter and feeders set up before the chicks come, and follow a tested brooding routine. Our brooding guide covers the first days in detail. If you are building a poultry business rather than rearing a small batch, our poultry business plan guide helps you put the whole budget together, and the starting a poultry farm guide sets out the sequence. For breed choice, the breed comparison helps you match the bird to your plan. If you are planning a larger operation, our partner and investment page explains how we work with people who invest in poultry.
The bottom line on day-old chick prices
How much a day-old chick costs in Ghana depends on the bird you want, the number you order, the health programme behind it and the delivery to your town. We will not invent a figure, and we will not promise a price or delivery time we cannot confirm. Do the budget with a real quote, compare on the same basis, and buy from a hatchery you can visit. The number that matters is the one we confirm for your order.
