If you are looking for a poultry feed supplier in Ghana, buy from a supplier that asks which stage your birds are at before it sells you a bag. Agro Prime Ghana runs a working poultry hatchery in Kasoa, in the Central Region, and supplies feed alongside day-old chicks and point-of-lay pullets. We arrange transport of feed to customers across Ghana, and we confirm delivery details when you order. The right feed depends on the age of the birds, so the first step is knowing which stage they are in.
Many feed problems on farms are not about the quality of the bag. They come from feeding the wrong stage for the bird's age, or changing feed too late or too early. A starter feed fed to a 16-week pullet wastes money, and a layer feed fed too early can cost you growth. The sections below set out the stages, the protein levels that go with them, and what to ask any supplier before you pay.

Quick answer
Agro Prime Ghana supplies poultry feed from our Kasoa hatchery and arranges transport to customers across Ghana. Choose feed by the bird's stage, not by the brand on the bag: starter feed for the first weeks, grower feed for the rearing period, developer feed for pullets, and layer feed once the birds are close to laying. To order, message WhatsApp (+233 24 915 1503) with the type of birds, their age, the quantity of feed and your town. We will confirm what we can supply, the feed type and the delivery arrangements. We do not publish feed prices in this article, because they change, so message us for a current quote.
Choose feed by stage: the protein levels that matter
Poultry feed is formulated for stages. The Oregon State University extension guide on chicken feeding sets out the typical pattern. Starter feed runs from hatch to about six weeks and carries the highest protein, at 18 to 20 percent crude protein. Grower feed runs from about six to 17 weeks, at about 15 to 16 percent. Developer feed can replace grower feed from about 14 weeks until laying, at 14 to 15 percent. Layer feed is usually started at about 18 to 20 weeks, or when the first egg is laid if that is earlier, and is formulated at about 16 percent crude protein.

The chart uses the protein ranges from the Oregon State guide. Read it as a guide to the order of the stages, not a formula for your ration. The exact protein of a bag depends on the manufacturer, and the feed label is the figure to check. Ask us for the crude protein of any feed we supply before you buy.
Feed stages in a table
The table below puts the stages side by side, with the feed you need, the age it is usually used and the point at which you should switch.
| Stage | Usual age | Typical crude protein | Switch when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | Hatch to about 6 weeks | 18 to 20% | Move to grower at about 6 weeks |
| Grower | About 6 to 17 weeks | 15 to 16% | Developer or layer feed as the birds near lay |
| Developer | From about 14 weeks until laying | 14 to 15% | Layer feed at about 18 to 20 weeks, or at first egg |
| Layer | About 18 to 20 weeks onwards, while laying | About 16% | Keep on layer feed while the flock is laying |
If you are feeding broilers rather than layers, the stage pattern is different. Our broiler feeding guide covers the broiler programme in detail. The same principle applies to both: match the feed to the bird, and change it on time.
Why feed is the biggest cost on the farm
Feed is where most of your money goes. A Ghanaian Times report from January 2026 quotes a poultry producer's estimate that feed makes up about 65 to 70 percent of total production cost. The report's wording is imperfect, so treat the figure as a quoted estimate rather than a survey result. Even so, it explains why feed planning matters: a few days of overfeeding or the wrong stage can add up across a whole flock.
Feed prices have also moved sharply. A February 2025 report on Ghana's poultry sector, citing USDA figures, said the cost of a 50-kilogram maize bag rose fivefold between 2019 and 2023, reaching US$18 in 2023. The same report quotes a 50-kilogram maize bag rising from US$16 in January to US$29, without stating the year. These are maize figures, not finished feed prices, and they are dated in different ways, so use them for context only. We do not have a dated, reliable source for current Ghana feed prices, so we do not quote one here. Message us on WhatsApp for today's price.
Need feed for the stage your birds are at?
Tell us the type of birds, their age in weeks and how many bags you need on WhatsApp (+233 24 915 1503). We will confirm the feed type that suits that stage and send a quote. If you would rather look at feed on site first, book a visit to the Kasoa hatchery.
What to ask any feed supplier before you pay
A good supplier will answer these questions plainly. Ask them before you buy from anyone, including us.
- Which stage is this feed for? A supplier who asks your bird age before recommending feed is looking after your flock, not just selling a bag.
- What is the crude protein? Check the label or ask for the figure. It should match the stage you need.
- When was it milled, and how is it stored? Ask about the date on the bag and the storage conditions. Feed that has sat in damp or hot conditions loses quality.
- Is it consistent from bag to bag? Ask whether the batch you buy matches the previous one, so the birds do not change feed mid-stage.
- How is it delivered? Ask about transport, handling and what happens if the feed arrives damaged.

Delivery: what we can and cannot promise
We are a poultry hatchery based in Kasoa, and we supply feed from there. We arrange transport to customers across Ghana, but we do not operate shops or depots in other towns, and we do not promise a fixed delivery time in this article. Delivery cost and timing depend on your location and the size of the order, so tell us your town early and we will confirm the arrangements before you pay.
Planning feed costs for a flock
If you are planning a flock from scratch, work out the feed bill before you buy birds. Multiply the number of birds by the feed each stage needs, then add a margin for waste and for stage changes. Our poultry business plan guide shows how to fold feed into the wider budget. If you are considering a larger operation, our partner and investment page sets out how we work with investors.
Bottom line
A poultry feed supplier should help you choose the right feed for the stage your birds are at. Start with the age, check the protein on the label, and plan the switch to the next stage before you need it. Agro Prime Ghana supplies feed from our Kasoa hatchery and arranges transport across Ghana, and we will be clear about what we can supply and when. For a current price and a stage recommendation, message us on WhatsApp.
