Day-Old Chicks Price in Ghana: What Drives the Cost

There is no single day-old chick price in Ghana. This guide explains the breed, order size, feed and vaccination factors behind the cost, and how to get a current quote from Agro Prime's Kasoa hatchery.

There is no single price for a day-old chick in Ghana, and any page that gives you one flat figure is leaving out the things that actually set your cost. The price moves with the type of bird (broiler or layer), how many you order, the season, and the vaccination and health programme behind the batch. Agro Prime Ghana runs a poultry hatchery in Kasoa and supplies day-old broiler and layer chicks, point-of-lay pullets and feed to farmers across Ghana. The quickest route to a real number is a WhatsApp message with the breed and quantity you need, and we will send you a current quote for that order. Feed is the biggest running cost in a poultry enterprise, and feed prices have moved a long way in recent years, so a figure you read online can go stale fast.

Quick answer

Day-old chick prices in Ghana vary with breed (broiler or layer), order size, season and vaccination. Agro Prime does not publish a fixed price list on this page, and we will not quote you a number from an old article. To get a current price, message us on WhatsApp (+233 24 915 1503) with the breed, the number of birds and your delivery town. We reply with a quote for that order. If you would rather see the birds before you pay, book a visit to our Kasoa hatchery.

What you are actually paying for when you buy a day-old chick

A day-old chick is only the first line of your budget. The chick carries the hatchery's cost of breeding, incubating, hatching, sexing where relevant, vaccinating and holding the birds before they leave. Once the chick is in your brooder, the real money goes into feed, heat, litter, water, vaccines and labour over the rearing period. That is why two quotes for "the same chick" can look far apart on paper and still be close once you compare what is included.

When you compare prices, ask yourself three questions. Is the bird the right type for my goal, meat or eggs? Is the batch healthy and vaccinated, and what programme came with it? And what does the price include, and what does it leave for me to pay? A cheap chick from an unknown source can cost you more in losses and slow growth than a fairly priced chick from a hatchery that stands behind its birds.

The factors that move the price of a day-old chick

The table below sets out what changes a quote and what to ask us when you message. Use it to build a like-for-like comparison before you accept any price, including ours.

FactorWhy it moves the priceWhat to ask us
Breed and purpose (broiler, layer, pullet)Broiler chicks are raised for meat, layer chicks for eggs, and point-of-lay pullets are older birds that are close to laying. Each has a different rearing cost and a different hatchery process.Which breed or strain is available, and whether the quote is for day-old chicks or point-of-lay pullets.
Order sizeHatcheries plan hatches around orders. Larger, planned orders are easier to schedule, so the unit price is often easier to settle for a bigger batch. The price per bird at your quantity, and whether a smaller order is possible.
Feed costsFeed is the largest running cost in poultry production. Feed ingredients such as maize and soybean meal change the cost of the whole chain.Whether the quote is valid for a set period, and what feed is recommended for your birds.
Vaccination and health programmeVaccines and health checks add cost, and they protect your flock. A properly vaccinated batch should be valued differently from an unvaccinated one.Which vaccines the batch received, and when the next ones are due.
Season and hatch timingDemand and feed costs shift through the year. Your hatch date can affect both availability and the quote. The next available hatch date for your breed, and the timing of your order.
Delivery distanceTransport is an extra cost when the chicks leave the hatchery. Distance, road conditions and the size of the consignment all count. The delivery cost to your town, and what happens if birds are lost in transit.

Why feed and chick costs dominate your budget

If you want to understand a chick price, look at feed first. The USDA's 2022 report on Ghana's poultry sector gives a sharp picture of the running cost. It estimated that feeding costs account for almost 80 percent of the total cost of production for broilers and layers. The same report recorded that prepared feeds rose between 49 and 82 percent in 2021 compared with 2019. Maize, the main energy source in many rations, went from GHS 50 per 50 kg bag in 2019 to GHS 160 in 2021, according to the same USDA data.

A 2022 study of Ghana's broiler systems in the International Food and Agribusiness Management Review reached a similar conclusion: feed and day-old chick costs are the most significant production cost items. Those two lines are where a hatchery's pricing and a farmer's budget meet. A fair chick price is one that reflects healthy birds bred to perform, and an honest supplier should be able to explain how they arrived at it.

These are the numbers available to us for this page, and they are dated. They show the direction costs have taken, not what a chick costs today. For a current figure, ask us for a quote on the day you order.

Get a quote for your exact order

Send us your breed, number of birds and delivery town on WhatsApp (+233 24 915 1503). We will reply with a quote for that order, including what it covers and what it does not. Prefer to see the birds first? Book a visit to our Kasoa hatchery and talk through the batch with us face to face.

How to get a real price from Agro Prime, step by step

Have these details ready and the quote takes minutes:

  • Decide the purpose. Meat (broiler), eggs (layer) or point-of-lay pullets for eggs within a few weeks. Each has a different price and rearing plan.
  • Count the birds you need. Plan a small buffer for normal losses in the first weeks, and tell us the total you want to end up with.
  • Know your delivery town. Tell us where the chicks must arrive. Delivery is confirmed when you message us, so we can quote the transport properly.
  • Message us on WhatsApp. Send the breed, quantity and town to +233 24 915 1503. Ask for the price per bird, what it includes, the vaccination programme and the next hatch date.
  • Check before you pay. Confirm the quote in writing, ask about payment terms, and agree how any losses in transit are handled before you commit.

Compare each quote against the table above, not just the number. A lower price with weaker vaccination or unclear delivery can cost more in the end.

Broiler, layer or pullet: choosing the product changes the price

The most common reason two buyers pay different prices is that they want different birds. A broiler chick is reared for meat, and its value is measured by how efficiently it turns feed into weight. Cobb's published performance objectives for the Cobb 500, on a mixed-sex basis, show a bird reaching about 3.28 kg by day 42, with cumulative feed conversion of about 1.56 kg of feed per kg of live weight. That efficiency is why the breed matters so much to your running cost. Our Cobb 500 guide goes into the detail.

A layer chick takes longer to earn its keep. Lohmann's Brown-Lite management guide puts 50 percent production at 140 to 150 days, roughly 20 to 21 weeks, which is why many farmers buy point-of-lay pullets when they want eggs sooner. A pullet costs more than a day-old chick because the rearing work is already done, and you pay for that time and care. Decide which of these fits your business before you compare prices. Our layer feeding guide covers the rearing and feeding side.

Delivery across Ghana and what to check before chicks arrive

Agro Prime is based in Kasoa, and we supply farmers across Ghana and arrange transport to customers in other regions. Delivery cost and timing depend on your town, the size of the consignment and the road, so we confirm them when you message us rather than promise a figure here. Ask for those details before you accept a quote.

Before the chicks arrive, have the brooder ready, with heat, clean litter, feeders and drinkers set up and the feed on hand. Our brooding guide walks through the setup, and it is far cheaper to prepare properly than to lose birds because the brooder was not ready. Good preparation protects the price you paid.

Budget for the whole cycle, not just the chick

A chick is one line in a farm budget. Plan for feed across the whole rearing period, brooding equipment, vaccines, litter, water, labour and the cost of any losses. The broiler feeding guide helps you estimate the feed side, and the poultry business plan guide shows how to put the whole budget together. If you are thinking about scaling up the hatchery side of the business, our partner and investment page explains how we work with people who want to invest in poultry.

The bottom line on day-old chick prices

There is no honest single price for a day-old chick in Ghana, and we will not invent one. What you can rely on is this: the price reflects breed, order size, feed, vaccination, timing and delivery, and a good supplier will explain each one. Get a quote for your exact order, compare what is included, and buy from a hatchery you can visit and speak to. That is the surest way to pay a fair price for birds that perform.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a day-old chick in Ghana?
The price depends on breed, order size, season, vaccination and delivery. We do not publish a fixed price on this page because it would go out of date. Message us on WhatsApp (+233 24 915 1503) with your breed and number of birds, and we will send a quote for that order.
Why does the price change from one supplier to another?
Suppliers differ in breed, vaccination programme, hatch planning, delivery and what the price includes. Compare quotes on the same basis: same breed, same quantity, same vaccines and same delivery terms.
Is a cheaper chick always the better deal?
Not necessarily. A low price with weak vaccination, unclear health history or poor transport handling can cost more through losses and slower growth. Check what the price includes before you decide.
Do you have a minimum order?
Ask us on WhatsApp for the minimum for the breed you want. We will confirm it in writing before you pay, so you know the order size from the start.
Are your chicks vaccinated?
Our chicks come from a hatchery vaccination programme. Ask us which vaccines your batch received, when, and when the next ones are due, so you can plan your flock's health schedule.
Should I buy broiler or layer chicks to save money?
Choose by purpose, not by the chick price alone. Broilers are raised for meat, and Cobb's published performance objectives reach about 3.28 kg at day 42 for a mixed-sex flock. Layers are raised for eggs and reach 50 percent production at about 20 to 21 weeks in Lohmann's guide. Compare the total cost to produce what you plan to sell.
How far ahead should I order?
Order as early as you can, and ask for the next hatch date for your breed. Timing depends on hatch planning, so we confirm the date when you message us rather than promise one here.
Do you deliver outside Kasoa, and what if birds die in transit?
We supply farmers across Ghana and arrange transport. Delivery cost and timing are confirmed when you message us. Ask about our policy on losses in transit before you order, and get the answer in writing.
