How to Start a Poultry Farm in Ghana with 100 Broilers: Costs & Profit

Poultry is one of the most accessible businesses in Ghana: you can start small, in your backyard, and scale as you learn. But too many beginners jump in without the numbers and lose money on their first batch. This guide gives you a realistic plan to start with 100 broilers — the costs, the likely profit, the mistakes to avoid, and how to grow from there.

Why start with 100 broilers?

One hundred broilers is big enough to be a real business lesson and small enough to be affordable and manageable in a backyard. You'll learn brooding, feeding, health and marketing on a batch you can handle — before risking bigger money.

What you need to start

  • A clean, secure space — a room, pen or simple structure that's dry, ventilated, and safe from rain, sun, thieves and predators. Roughly 10 square metres comfortably houses 100 broilers to market.
  • Brooding equipment — heat source (charcoal pot, gas or heat lamp), brooder guard, litter (wood shavings).
  • Feeders and drinkers — enough that all birds eat and drink at once.
  • 100 quality, vaccinated day-old broiler chicks.
  • Feed — starter then finisher for the whole 6–8 week cycle.
  • Vaccines, vitamins and basic medications.
  • A market — decided before you buy the chicks.

Realistic startup cost for 100 broilers

The figures below are 2026 planning estimates for Ghana. Your actual numbers will vary with location, feed price and whether you build or already have housing. Treat this as a budgeting framework, not a fixed quote.

ItemEstimated cost (GH₵)
100 day-old broiler chicks1,000 – 1,600
Feed for full cycle (~450 kg / ~9 bags)3,600 – 4,000
Vaccines, vitamins, medication250 – 450
Litter, charcoal/heat, misc.250 – 450
Feeders & drinkers (one-off, reusable)400 – 700
Approx. total to first sale≈ 5,500 – 7,200

Feeders and drinkers are a one-off you reuse for every future batch, so batch two onward is cheaper. Feed is by far the biggest line — manage it well (see our feed guide).

What can you earn?

With good management and mortality kept low (aim for under 5%), around 95 birds reach market. Depending on live/dressed weight and your selling price, broilers sell for a meaningful margin over cost — especially when you time the batch for a festive season (Christmas, Easter, Ramadan/Eid) when both demand and prices are highest.

The festive-season strategy

Count back 6–8 weeks from Christmas or Eid and buy your chicks then. Birds hitting market weight exactly when demand peaks fetch the best prices — this timing alone can make the difference between a thin margin and a strong one.

The mistakes that sink new poultry farmers

  1. No market before buying chicks. The biggest killer. Don't produce 95 broilers and then wonder who'll buy them. Line up buyers — chop bars, restaurants, cold stores, neighbours, WhatsApp groups — first.
  2. Underestimating feed cost. Feed is 60–70% of your cost. Farmers who don't budget the full feed bill run out of money mid-cycle and sell birds underweight at a loss.
  3. Skipping vaccination. One Newcastle outbreak can wipe out the whole batch. Follow the vaccination schedule — it's cheap insurance.
  4. Poor brooding. Losing chicks in week one destroys your economics before you start. Get brooding right.
  5. Buying weak or cheap chicks. Poor chicks grow poorly and die more. Start with healthy, vaccinated chicks from a known hatchery.
  6. Holding birds too long. Every extra day feeding a market-ready broiler eats your profit. Sell on time.
  7. Ignoring records. Track feed, deaths, weights and costs. You can't improve what you don't measure.

Competing with imported frozen chicken

Imported frozen chicken is cheaper and a real competitive pressure on Ghanaian farmers. You won't out-price it, so compete on what it can't offer: fresh, locally-raised birds; live or freshly-dressed sales; the "local taste" premium; reliability to a regular buyer; and direct relationships with chop bars, event caterers and neighbours. Many customers will pay more for fresh, trusted, local chicken — sell that story, not just the meat.

How to grow from your first batch

Treat batch one as paid education. Reinvest the profit, keep your reusable equipment, tighten your feed and mortality numbers, and scale to 200, then 500 birds as your market grows. Many of Ghana's larger farms started exactly here — with one modest batch, good records, and steady reinvestment. Consider adding layers later for steady weekly income alongside the lump-sum broiler cycles.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to start a poultry farm in Ghana?
A backyard batch of 100 broilers needs roughly GH₵5,500–7,200 to first sale in 2026, with feed the biggest share. You can start smaller or larger; feeders and drinkers are a one-off you reuse each batch.
Is poultry farming profitable in Ghana?
Yes, when managed well — especially broilers timed for festive seasons and layers for steady egg income. Profit depends on controlling feed cost, keeping mortality low, and securing your market before you buy chicks.
How many broilers should a beginner start with?
Around 100 is ideal — affordable, manageable in a backyard, and big enough to learn real management and marketing before scaling up.
How do I compete with imported frozen chicken?
Don't compete on price — compete on freshness, local taste, live/fresh sales and reliable relationships with buyers like chop bars and caterers who value trusted local chicken.
